The Montgomery ISD Board of Trustees held its regular monthly meeting on September 15, 2026. As part of National Arts in Education Week, which is celebrated September 13 through 19 this year, the Board recognized the Lake Creek and Montgomery High School Fine Arts programs and received a special presentation from theatre students from each school.
National Arts in Education Week is a nationwide celebration of arts in education. Approved by Congress in 2010, the second week of September is designated to highlight the benefits of and need for the arts in education. In recognition of the week, students from the theatre programs at both high schools announced their 2026-27 lineup of performances.
From Montgomery High School Theatre, students Ginger Brown, Gabriela Mendez Ricardo, Joy Denn and Kianna Phillips announced the following shows:
- Six: Teen Edition – September 28 – October 5
- Underdog: The Other Bronte – November 6 – 9
- The Best Christmas Pageant Ever – December 7 & 10
- Anastasia the Musical – January 28 – February 6
- Senior Directed One Act Plays – May 3 – 4
From Lake Creek High School Theatre, students Dillon Hight, Rylie Roberts and Emma Enge announced the following shows:
- Student Directed 10 Minute Plays – September 24 -26
- Almost, Maine – October 22 -26
- A Christmas Carol – December 10 -12
- Winnie the Pooh -January 28 – 30
- John Lennon and Me – date to be announced
“I always enjoy seeing our students show off their talents through their performances,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Ruffin. “We have some incredibly talented students, and it is always exciting to see them take the stage and share what they have worked so hard to create. Our Fine Arts teachers do a great job giving our students opportunities to grow and showcase their talents. I am looking forward to seeing the shows this year and hope our families and community will come out and support our students.”
Each Board member was presented with a complimentary ticket to attend a performance this year. The Board’s recognition of the Fine Arts programs highlights the important role the arts play in providing students with opportunities to explore their creativity, build confidence and develop skills that extend well beyond the stage.

At Home Flexible Learning Option Survey
In August, Montgomery ISD conducted a community survey to gather feedback and gauge interest in an at home and flexible learning option. The Board received an update on the results during its September 1 special meeting.
The goal of a potential program would be to provide an additional educational pathway alongside traditional on campus learning, giving students and families greater flexibility while maintaining access to the academic opportunities, support and experiences available through Montgomery ISD.
A potential model could include:
- Flexible learning structures and schedules
- High quality instruction from MISD educators
- In-person and at home academic course offerings and student support
- Opportunities for students to remain connected to their campuses and participate in extracurricular activities
“Montgomery ISD is committed to listening to our students and families and being responsive to their needs,” Board President Eddie Winn said. “We are grateful to the families who took the time to participate in this survey and share what they would want to see in a flexible learning option. Their feedback gives us valuable insight as we consider how we can provide greater flexibility while maintaining the academic opportunities, relationships and experiences that are important to our students and families.”
The survey generated 2,677 responses and provided valuable insight into what students and families are looking for in a flexible learning option.
Survey results at a glance:
- 72% of respondents said they are very or somewhat interested in an MISD at home learning option.
- 87% said they would definitely choose or seriously consider an at home option if it met their family’s needs.
- 73% prefer either a hybrid home and in person model or primarily at home learning with opportunities to remain connected to campus.
- 74% identified spring or fall 2027 as the timeframe when they would be interested in an option.
- 91% said earning an MISD diploma is extremely important or very important.
- 91% said participating in an MISD graduation ceremony is extremely important or very important.
- 86% said flexibility and the ability to learn at an individual pace is extremely important or very important.
- 85% said AP, honors and dual credit course offerings are extremely important or very important.
What We Heard From Families
The survey results point to several themes for Montgomery ISD to consider in any flexible learning option offered.
- Flexibility in scheduling was the most frequently identified reason families who responded to the survey were interested in an at home option, with many also valuing the ability for students to work at a different pace.
- Families want to remain connected to MISD. The importance placed on earning an MISD diploma, participating in graduation ceremonies and maintaining access to academic opportunities shows that families want students in a flexible learning option to remain MISD students in every meaningful sense.
- Nearly three quarters of respondents preferred a model that includes both at home and in-person learning or opportunities to remain connected to campus. Live classes combined with flexible coursework was also the most popular schedule option.
- Families want flexibility without giving up opportunities. Access to advanced academic courses, CTE programs, extracurricular activities, academic support and other campus opportunities were among the features families rated most important.
Next Steps
Montgomery ISD will use the survey feedback to help inform the development of a potential at home and flexible learning option.
The district’s current goal is to launch a small cohort of fully virtual high school students in spring 2027. An expanded option, which would provide students with the opportunity to take courses both at home and in person, is targeted for fall 2027. The district will communicate additional information and next steps to families later this fall.
